The Magic Cloth Technique involves controlling the amount of exposure to different parts of a scene during a slow shutter. The technique involves dodging and burning over a long exposure.
Using a dark cloth (or card) you can reduce the exposure to the sky (or highlights) by covering the front of the lens for part of the exposure time

This was an incredible Valentine’s morning on the ice beach. We were in the middle of a photo tour and the light was exactly like this as we arrived on the beach because this was the very first image I took that morning.
We found ourselves in East Iceland looking at a northern Lights forecast. Not to be defeated, we decided to head back to Vestrahorn mountain with a view to doing star trails or some form of night photography.
I drove from Reykjavik to Jökulsarlon to photograph the sunrise on the Diamond Beach. I could see that an Icelandic winter sunrise was colourful, but there was very little ice on the beach.
The diamond beach with black sand & magical chunks of blue glacial ice is where the Atlantic Ocean interacts with Iceland’s largest glacier.
The Diamond Ice beach is the final land based resting place for ice chunks that calve from the retreating Vatnjökull ice cap.
Godafoss the Waterfall of the Gods is a fine location for photographers, both Summer and Winter.
The main requirement for using the Magic Cloth Technique is having a long exposure, so Northern Lights photography is an obvious choice.
