Vatnjokull Glacier

The massive Vatnjokull glacier in Iceland is the largest ice cap in Europe.  It feeds Jokulsarlon and many other glacier lagoons with mini icebergs and melt water.  When the conditions are still and the colours of a sunrise or sunset fill the sky, the colours reflect off the ice and still waters of these lagoons. This is something that can be witnessed in the coldest winter, mid-summer and all year round.  I visited the glacier lagoons on a weekly basis for over 10 years.  Although I tended to avoid it in the Summer because there became too many tourists that it was no longer enjoyable. Here is an opportunity for you to own one of these beautiful photos for you home, office, website or business.

Glacier lagoons guarantee ice all year round! The Glacier lagoon at Jökulsarlon has been forming for about 100 years. As the ice shelf retreats it delivers beautiful ice into the lake which drifts slowly towards the mouth of the lagoon.   Sometimes, the weather is terrible, but it is unusual to come away with no photos of glacier ice.  Because the lagoon connects with the North Atlantic ocean, it is tidal and contains salt.  The movement of the lake causes icebergs to move around and turn over.  Because of the salt and movement this lagoon rarely freezes.

The Fjallsarlon lagoon is only a 10 minute drive from Jökulsarlon .  Because it doesn’t open out to the sea, the icebergs are fairly stationary and the lake surface is more likely to freeze.  The lagoon is quite small and the viewing points are closer to the ice shelf which means that you are likely to see the ice calving.
