{"id":2788,"date":"2021-09-25T17:00:44","date_gmt":"2021-09-25T17:00:44","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/icelandaurora.com\/tours\/?p=2788"},"modified":"2023-11-21T15:48:54","modified_gmt":"2023-11-21T15:48:54","slug":"budir","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.icelandaurora.com\/archive-phototours\/budir\/","title":{"rendered":"Bu\u00f0ir black church &#8211; Sn\u00e6fellsnes Peninsula"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"black-church-at-budir\">Black church at Bu\u00f0ir<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The hamlet of Bu\u00f0ir haunts the Southern edge of the Sn\u00e6fellsnes peninsular about 40 minute drive from&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.icelandaurora.com\/photoguide\/kirkjufell\/\">Kirkjufellsfoss waterfall<\/a>.&nbsp; Bu\u00f0ir used to have potential as a trading point during the Danish Days as it has a natural harbour and good mountain pass to the Northern side of the peninsular. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"contents\">Contents<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<nav class=\"wp-block-stackable-table-of-contents stk-block-table-of-contents stk-block stk-cbe0580\" data-block-id=\"cbe0580\"><ul class=\"stk-table-of-contents__table\"><li><a href=\"#black-church-at-budir\">Black church at Bu\u00f0ir<\/a><\/li><li><a href=\"#pitch-perfect-church\">Pitch Perfect Church<\/a><\/li><li><a href=\"#photography-tips\">Photography tips<\/a><\/li><li><a href=\"#surrounding-area\">Surrounding area<\/a><\/li><li><a href=\"#book-a-tour\">Book a Tour<\/a><\/li><\/ul><\/nav>\n\n\n\n<p>The South Edge of Sn\u00e6fellsnes has open sea to Reykjavik and road to Borganes (the previous capital).&nbsp; Currently there is a 4 star hotel right on the tiny harbour and the famous church, called \u2018B\u00fa\u00f0arkirkja \u2018, is just a 100 meters up a narrow, winding lane. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"hiking-area\">Hiking Area<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Apart from the Bu\u00f0ir black church there are some interesting views and hikes across the lava field (Bu\u00f0ahraun) towards the Bu\u00f0aklettur and Sn\u00e6fellsj\u00f6kull Volcano. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>There is an old wall from a bygone farm, a bit of a beach with yellow sand South of the Budir Church and a network of rough pathways to get there.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1000\" height=\"667\" src=\"https:\/\/www.icelandaurora.com\/photoguide\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2012\/05\/BudirRight.jpg\" alt=\"Bu\u00f0akirkja\" class=\"wp-image-5434\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.icelandaurora.com\/archive-phototours\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2012\/05\/BudirRight.jpg 1000w, https:\/\/www.icelandaurora.com\/archive-phototours\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2012\/05\/BudirRight-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.icelandaurora.com\/archive-phototours\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2012\/05\/BudirRight-768x512.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.icelandaurora.com\/archive-phototours\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2012\/05\/BudirRight-800x534.jpg 800w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1000px) 100vw, 1000px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"pitch-perfect-church\">Pitch Perfect Church<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The Bu\u00f0ir black church is one of 3 black churches in Iceland. The small church is black because the exterior wood is painted with pitch, just like the hull of a boat. This is to protect the church from the harsh Icelandic elements. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This works fairly well, and buildings treated in this way have survived over 100 years, which is a long time for a building to stand in Iceland.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"without-the-help-of-the-fathers\">Without the help of the Fathers<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>The church here is culturally significant. There has been a church here since 1703. When the importance of Bu\u00f0ir as a trading post declined, the hamlet was declared to no longer be a parish. A replacement church was needed, but not forthcoming from the church. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>One woman fought and won the Danish King\u2019s permission to build a new black church. Steinunn L\u00e1rusd\u00f3ttir. When her church was completed in 1848, a plaque claimed the Bu\u00f0ir black church was built without the help of the \u201cFathers\u201d, in other words, without any help from the Lutheran Church. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The church that stands there now is a reconstruction of Steinunn L\u00e1rusd\u00f3ttir\u2019s church. There is a narrow, but well-maintained, road leading past the hotel and on to the church. If there is a lot of snow, the road might only be cleared up to the hotel, and then it requires a short walk. The graveyard offers some interesting foreground. Also the church can be framed with the gate posts. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For a standard wide angle capture, get close and set the tripod high to even out the distortion of the top and bottom of the building. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It is a black church, so you are free to concentrate exposure on other things, such as the sky, without losing the subject, although it is nice to capture some texture in the dark wood.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"surrounding-area\">Surrounding area<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/B%C3%BA%C3%B0ir\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Bu\u00f0akirkja<\/a>\u00a0is close to a lava field called Bu\u00f0ahraun. It is also close to one of Iceland\u2019s top hotels and restaurants, the Bu\u00f0ir Hotel.
