{"id":423,"date":"2012-05-05T17:00:25","date_gmt":"2012-05-05T17:00:25","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/icelandaurora.com\/tours\/?p=423"},"modified":"2023-11-19T11:55:15","modified_gmt":"2023-11-19T11:55:15","slug":"latrabjarg","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.icelandaurora.com\/archive-phototours\/latrabjarg\/","title":{"rendered":"L\u00e1trabjarg Bird cliffs &#8211; Westfjords Iceland"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Puffin Cliffs<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>One word comes to mind when you mention Latrabjarg \u2026 \u201cPuffins\u201d. although Latrabjarg is not the spot with the largest puffin colony, Latrabjarg has the tamest puffins. They are tame to the point where you can almost touch them. Naturally getting a good photograph of them is fairly easy, you don\u2019t even need a long lens.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A tourist died a few years ago after falling off the cliffs, so please be very careful and remember that this is only a photograph. The challenge with Latrabjarg is getting there. It takes a whole day to drive through the West Fjords to get to the spot, and that includes a variety of road surfaces that maybe should be reserved for jeeps. There is a way to reduce the drive. You can get the ferry from Stykkisholmur on the Sn\u00e6fellsness peninsular. This crosses Brei\u00f0afj\u00f6r\u00f0ur (the broad fjord) and costs about the same as the petrol would if you drove. It doesn\u2019t cut the time or make your trip any shorter though. The ferry is often very calm as it crosses the fjord stopping only once at a small island \u2013 Flatey.\u00a0 It is possible to see puffins at sea on the ferry ride. Baldur is <\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-buttons is-content-justification-center is-layout-flex wp-container-core-buttons-layout-1 wp-block-buttons-is-layout-flex\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-button is-style-outline\"><a class=\"wp-block-button__link has-vivid-cyan-blue-color has-text-color wp-element-button\" href=\"https:\/\/www.icelandaurora.com\/photoguide\/photo-activities\/self-drive\/flytours\/flytour-westfjords\/\" style=\"border-radius:21px\">FlyDrive &#8211; Westfjords<\/a><\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>Puffins can be seen at Latrabjarg from May through August, but the prime time to see the puffins is June\u2013July.\u00a0 As there is midnight sun at this time of the year, it would be wise for the photographer to avoid tourists and midday sun.\u00a0 There is a hotel near Latrabjarg, but I recommend staying in a more central town like Patreksfjordur.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"800\" height=\"370\" src=\"https:\/\/www.icelandaurora.com\/photoguide\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2016\/06\/Puffin2000-e1561806398340.jpg\" alt=\"Iceland puffin tour\" class=\"wp-image-6558\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.icelandaurora.com\/archive-phototours\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2016\/06\/Puffin2000-e1561806398340.jpg 800w, https:\/\/www.icelandaurora.com\/archive-phototours\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2016\/06\/Puffin2000-e1561806398340-768x355.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Photo Tips<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>You don\u2019t need a long lens, but anything longer than 50mm would be beneficial. Be patient; the puffins will get used to you if you lay still and quiet. Beware; there may be bird ticks in the grass. Be properly dressed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Endangered Species<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>I do believe that the increase in tourism may have affected puffin numbers.\u00a0 Puffins are considered endangered in Iceland, so it seems a shame to eat them. The meat is dark and oily, which is not to my taste.
