Click to buy a print!<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>It&#8217;s challenging to better J\u00f6kulsarlon for photography. Photography doesn&#8217;t get much greater than capturing the Northern Lights in a quiet lagoon alongside glacier icebergs. The well-known glacial lagoon is ideally suited for taking pictures of the aurora. The majority of the shoreline&#8217;s accessible areas face north, and most light displays appear between the mountains and above the glacier. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>While returning from the area with his family, one of Iceland&#8217;s best northern lights photographers noticed some impressive auroras in J\u00f6kulsarlon. According to rumours, he drove his family back to Reykjavik for five hours before returning to J\u00f6kulsarlon for another five hours to take pictures of the auroras. The most extensive collection of Northern Lights images and films from Iceland is that of Aurora Legend <a href=\"https:\/\/www.olgeir.com\/p697152769\" title=\"\">Olgeir Andresson<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"vestrahorn-mountain\">Vestrahorn Mountain<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.icelandaurora.com\/photo-tutorials\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2018\/01\/HornyLights-Edited.jpg\" alt=\"Vestrahorn Northern Lights\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Vestrahorn Mountain is one of my favourite locations for winter afternoons.\u00a0 It is not easy for Northern Lights because the landowner has introduced a toll and has a physical barrier on the access road.\u00a0 Although you might have paid, if the barrier malfunctions at night, you could be stuck there until the Viking Cafe opens in the morning.\u00a0 The trick with the automatic barrier is to drive up very close to it, and if that still doesn\u2019t work, beep your horn to raise the attention of the landowner.\u00a0 If it is night, then keep sounding your horn to let him know.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The above image was taken around 8 p.m. on a winter evening after a nice meal in Cafe Horny.\u00a0 It is a good example of how effective the \u201cMagic Cloth Technique\u201d is for night photography.\u00a0 Read more about this picture\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.icelandaurora.com\/photo-tutorials\/guide-to\/long-exposure\/magic-cloth-technique\/horny-lights\/\">HERE<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"kirkjufell-mountain\">Kirkjufell Mountain<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.icelandaurora.com\/photo-galleries\/kirkjufell-aurora\/\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"800\" height=\"617\" src=\"https:\/\/www.icelandaurora.com\/photoguide\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2022\/01\/KFFNight3.jpg\" alt=\"kirkjufell Mountain Aurora\" class=\"wp-image-83489\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.icelandaurora.com\/archive-phototours\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2022\/01\/KFFNight3.jpg 800w, https:\/\/www.icelandaurora.com\/archive-phototours\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2022\/01\/KFFNight3-300x231.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.icelandaurora.com\/archive-phototours\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2022\/01\/KFFNight3-768x592.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.icelandaurora.com\/archive-phototours\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2022\/01\/KFFNight3-610x470.jpg 610w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px\" \/><\/a><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Click to buy a print!!<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Kirkjufell Mountain is officially the most photographed mountain in Iceland.&nbsp; Kirkjufell is close to Grundarfj\u00f6r\u00f0ur \u2013 a town on the Northern Coast of the Sn\u00e6fellsnes&nbsp;Peninsula.&nbsp; The North facing view works well with the Northern lights as the mountain is silhouetted against the nigh sky.&nbsp; The nearby waterfall is a good option for night photography, but there is also a small lake after the waterfall.&nbsp; It is possible to get a god reflection of&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.icelandaurora.com\/photoguide\/kirkjufell\/\">Kirkjufell Mountain<\/a>&nbsp;and the Northern lights in the lake.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"godafoss-waterfall\">Go\u00f0afoss Waterfall<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.icelandaurora.com\/photoguide\/godafoss-waterfall\/\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"800\" height=\"630\" src=\"https:\/\/www.icelandaurora.com\/photoguide\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2022\/01\/1GodaShore-crop.jpg\" alt=\"Go\u00f0afoss Waterfall Northern Lights\" class=\"wp-image-83491\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.icelandaurora.com\/archive-phototours\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2022\/01\/1GodaShore-crop.jpg 800w, https:\/\/www.icelandaurora.com\/archive-phototours\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2022\/01\/1GodaShore-crop-300x236.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.icelandaurora.com\/archive-phototours\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2022\/01\/1GodaShore-crop-768x604.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.icelandaurora.com\/archive-phototours\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2022\/01\/1GodaShore-crop-610x480.jpg 610w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px\" \/><\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Go\u00f0afoss is my favourite place to be on a summer night.\u00a0 10 years running, I visited the waterfall at 3.a.m on a summer night.\u00a0 It doesn\u2019t work so well for the northern lights because, as you face the falls from the river bank, you are facing south.\u00a0 Southern sky northern lights are not impossible, but they are rare. Also, North Iceland has access issues in the winter, with the chances of the main road being closed.\u00a0 I only visited Go\u00f0afoss waterfall once in the winter, and we were unlucky with auroras.\u00a0 The above image is fake, just like many other Go\u00f0afoss Northern Lights photos.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"hvitserkur\">Hv\u00edtserkur<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"800\" height=\"534\" src=\"https:\/\/www.icelandaurora.com\/photoguide\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2022\/01\/ShitShirt-copy-e1641989990695.jpg\" alt=\"Hv\u00edtserkur Aurora\" class=\"wp-image-83492\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.icelandaurora.com\/photoguide\/hvitserkur\/\">Hv\u00edtserkur<\/a>\u00a0is known as the Troll Rock or the Drinking Dragon.\u00a0 It is in the north of Iceland, near the town of Hvammstangi.\u00a0 \u00a0The rock is an ancient volcanic core and is made of very tough basalt rock.\u00a0 The inlet is well sheltered and quite shallow, so reflections can be quite good.\u00a0 Also, the view out of the fjord is facing north.\u00a0 There was a hotel very close, but everyone I talked to said that it wasn\u2019t very well managed, and now it\u2019s closed.\u00a0 Check out nearby hotels\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/fave.co\/3fey9t5\">HERE<\/a>.\u00a0 I camped there once and managed some night photography.\u00a0 Camping is not permitted.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"namaskard-hverir\">N\u00e1maskar\u00f0 Hverir<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.icelandaurora.com\/photoguide\/namafjall-hverir\/\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"800\" height=\"533\" src=\"https:\/\/www.icelandaurora.com\/photoguide\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2022\/01\/image418.jpg\" alt=\"N\u00e1maskar\u00f0 Hverir Northern Lights\" class=\"wp-image-83493\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.icelandaurora.com\/archive-phototours\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2022\/01\/image418.jpg 800w, https:\/\/www.icelandaurora.com\/archive-phototours\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2022\/01\/image418-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.icelandaurora.com\/archive-phototours\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2022\/01\/image418-768x512.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.icelandaurora.com\/archive-phototours\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2022\/01\/image418-610x407.jpg 610w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px\" \/><\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>N\u00e1maskar\u00f0 Hverir is a geothermal area in the north of Iceland, close to Lake Myvatn.\u00a0 N\u00e1maskar\u00f0 is a clay terrain with bubbling mud pots and steaming fumaroles.\u00a0 The good thing about the Fumaroles is that you can move around them to get the Northern Lights in the right place.\u00a0 However, geothermal zones can be hazardous, and wandering around at night could get you into trouble.\u00a0 There are some very good\u00a0hotels around Lake Myvatn, so you don\u2019t have to stay too far from the location.\u00a0 My strong recommendation is Hotel Laxa.\u00a0 Although it is not the closest to N\u00e1maskar\u00f0, it is the best value. Beware of the wet clay! After rain, the clay can be soft, and it really sticks to your shoes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"grotta-lighthouse\">Grotta Lighthouse<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.icelandaurora.com\/photoguide\/grotta-lighthouse-at-seltjarnarnes\/\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"800\" height=\"533\" src=\"https:\/\/www.icelandaurora.com\/photoguide\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2022\/01\/Grotta3.jpg\" alt=\"Grotta Lighthouse and Northern Lights\" class=\"wp-image-83494\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.icelandaurora.com\/archive-phototours\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2022\/01\/Grotta3.jpg 800w, https:\/\/www.icelandaurora.com\/archive-phototours\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2022\/01\/Grotta3-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.icelandaurora.com\/archive-phototours\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2022\/01\/Grotta3-768x512.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.icelandaurora.com\/archive-phototours\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2022\/01\/Grotta3-610x406.jpg 610w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px\" \/><\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Grotta Lighthouse is a short walk from downtown Reykjavik.\u00a0 It used to take me 45 minutes each way.\u00a0 The lighthouse is on an island.\u00a0 I wouldn\u2019t recommend going out to the lighthouse for Northern Lights photography.\u00a0 If you lose track of time, you could end up stranded by the high tide.\u00a0 The photography is better from the mainland because there is a bay of water, which can be useful for reflections.\u00a0 Although Grotta is close to the city lights, the view out to sea isn\u2019t affected by Iceland\u2019s capital city light pollution.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"fjallsarlon-glacier-lagoon\">Fjalls\u00e1rl\u00f3n Glacier Lagoon<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.icelandaurora.com\/photoguide\/fjallsarlon\/\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"800\" height=\"533\" src=\"https:\/\/www.icelandaurora.com\/photoguide\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2022\/01\/RD7A6123.jpg\" alt=\"Fjalls\u00e1rl\u00f3n Northern Lights\" class=\"wp-image-83496\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.icelandaurora.com\/archive-phototours\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2022\/01\/RD7A6123.jpg 800w, https:\/\/www.icelandaurora.com\/archive-phototours\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2022\/01\/RD7A6123-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.icelandaurora.com\/archive-phototours\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2022\/01\/RD7A6123-768x512.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.icelandaurora.com\/archive-phototours\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2022\/01\/RD7A6123-610x406.jpg 610w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px\" \/><\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><br>Fjalls\u00e1rl\u00f3n Glacier Lagoon is close to Jokulsarlon.\u00a0 It takes about 10-15 minutes to drive there from Jokulsarlon.\u00a0 The glacier lagoon is enclosed and doesn\u2019t have interaction with the ocean.\u00a0 Fjalls\u00e1rl\u00f3n is a small lagoon, so it\u2019s close to the glacier.\u00a0 The lagoon can have large floating icebergs and good reflections.\u00a0 It can be difficult to find at night, and the access can be difficult, so it\u2019s best to check it out in the daytime first.\u00a0 Because this smaller lagoon is closer to the mountains, the view to the northern horizon is obscured.\u00a0 This can affect aurora viewing, but a strong aurora display has no issues.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"vik-i-myrdal\">V\u00edk \u00ed M\u00fdrdal<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.icelandaurora.com\/photoguide\/vik-reynisdrangur\/\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"800\" height=\"533\" src=\"https:\/\/www.icelandaurora.com\/photoguide\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2022\/01\/PitchPerfect.jpg\" alt=\"Northern lights and Reynisdrangar\" class=\"wp-image-83497\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.icelandaurora.com\/archive-phototours\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2022\/01\/PitchPerfect.jpg 800w, https:\/\/www.icelandaurora.com\/archive-phototours\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2022\/01\/PitchPerfect-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.icelandaurora.com\/archive-phototours\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2022\/01\/PitchPerfect-768x512.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.icelandaurora.com\/archive-phototours\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2022\/01\/PitchPerfect-610x406.jpg 610w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px\" \/><\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>V\u00edk \u00ed M\u00fdrdal is nearly the Southern most point in Iceland. V\u00edk \u00ed M\u00fdrdal is famous for the Reynisdrangar sea-stacks which create an iconic silhouette against the night sky. The famous black sand beaches at Vik and Reynisfjara both have views of Reynisdrangar. Reynisfjara can be dangerous during the day, so you should be extra vigilant at night. Views of Reynisdrangar are facing South, so photographing good Northern lights here is quite rare.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.icelandaurora.com\/photo-tutorials\/guide-to\/night-northern-lights\/photographing-northern-lights-aurora-borealis\/\">HOW TO PHOTOGRAPH THE NORTHERN LIGHTS<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"oxararfoss-waterfall\">\u00d6xar\u00e1rfoss waterfall<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.icelandaurora.com\/photoguide\/oxararfoss-at-thingvellir\/\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"800\" height=\"534\" src=\"https:\/\/www.icelandaurora.com\/photoguide\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2022\/01\/1OxLand-copy-e1641994564225.jpg\" alt=\"\u00d6xar\u00e1rfoss waterfall northern lights\" class=\"wp-image-83502\"\/><\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>\u00d6xar\u00e1rfoss waterfall is located at \u00feingvellir National Park. The waterfall is only one hour drive from Reykjavik, so it\u2019s a possibility if you are staying in the Capital. The falls can be accessed from the low plateau of the parliamentary plains.
