Fjaðrárgljúfur River gorge
This beautiful river gorge near Kirkjubærklaustur in South East Iceland had a fresh blast of snow on this February evening. We waded through the river to this point with a clear view through the river gorge. It can be beautiful to wade up through the canyon. Usually the river is low enough to allow safe access to most of the canyon floor. The deepest part to cross is over the knee, so regular boots wont suffice.
This photo was taken from the little road bridge which spans the river.
Because of the sudden increases in visitors to Fjaðrárgljúfur over the last couple of years, the wardens started gradually restricting access to parts of the canyon. This year, Fjaðrárgljúfur has been closed because the damage to the landscape has been so great.
From this position, I had several challenges. It took 17 shots to get to this one and I already knew my composition!
We checked out the Kirkjufellsfoss waterfall earlier in the day and there were 6 – 10 tourists walking through the scene at any one time.
The one thing we agreed on was to leave our tents erect and stay another night at the falls.
