Fjaðrárgljúfur River gorge
This beautiful river gorge near Kirkjubærklaustur in South East Iceland had a fresh blast of snow on this February evening. We waded through the river to this point with a clear view through the river gorge. It can be beautiful to wade up through the canyon. Usually the river is low enough to allow safe access to most of the canyon floor. The deepest part to cross is over the knee, so regular boots wont suffice.
This photo was taken from the little road bridge which spans the river.
Because of the sudden increases in visitors to Fjaðrárgljúfur over the last couple of years, the wardens started gradually restricting access to parts of the canyon. This year, Fjaðrárgljúfur has been closed because the damage to the landscape has been so great.
The weather was cloudy but as we turned the corner, a gap in the clouds allowed some beautiful, Winter light onto the scene.
The dawn is not a quick affair in Iceland. The colours can be good for many hours especially on a mid-Summer night.
The black sand beach with magical chunks of glacial ice is where the Atlantic Ocean interacts with Europe’s largest glacier.
