This was an evening trip along the South coast of Iceland in 2010 to get as close as possible to the erupting volcano. There were official road blocks everywhere to stop people driving into danger, so we took a back road away from the coast to give us a view from behind the mountains.
This dramatic photograph is a crop from a 50mm focal length. My longest lens was a 50mm and could only get 10km close because of the exclusion zone. The technique used here was to keep the shutter open for about 30 seconds at a time until I had some frames with some lightning action. This was my favourite.
