Fjaðrárgljúfur River gorge
This beautiful river gorge near Kirkjubærklaustur in South East Iceland had a fresh blast of snow on this February evening. We waded through the river to this point with a clear view through the river gorge. It can be beautiful to wade up through the canyon. Usually the river is low enough to allow safe access to most of the canyon floor. The deepest part to cross is over the knee, so regular boots wont suffice.
This photo was taken from the little road bridge which spans the river.
Because of the sudden increases in visitors to Fjaðrárgljúfur over the last couple of years, the wardens started gradually restricting access to parts of the canyon. This year, Fjaðrárgljúfur has been closed because the damage to the landscape has been so great.
Although the Northern lights require a long exposure, the object is often to reduce exposure time as much as possible to achieve a usable exposure and with minimal star trails.
Taken on July 17, 2011 on a photo tour through Iceland’s Southern Highlands (or Fjallabak – behind the mountains).
