Moss on Red
A landscape photo of the amazing Autumn colours on an early October morning. The location is under Svinafell mountain near Vatnjokull glacier in South East Iceland. There is a dramatic contrast between red and green. It is the late blueberry leaves as they reach the end of their season among the moss which is hardy plant. The green in the moss will stay well into the snow season, but really is at its peak in the September evening light.
The black sand beach with magical chunks of glacial ice is where the Atlantic Ocean interacts with Europe’s largest glacier.
This is a very popular ice cave and is normally full of tourists. On this morning, we were in there hours before the tourists.
This beach is the final land based resting place for ice chunks that calve from the retreating Vatnjökull ice cap.
