This was a stormy session with big waves and an exciting dawn sky. The main challenge here was there was too much ice on the beach. These ice locations, such as the ice beach at Breiðamerkursandur near Jökulsarlon are so great for learning photography because each chunk of glacier ice presents composition challenges. Each chunk of ice teaches you a little more about light and composition, because it is never what you expect, so you have to make sense of it as it is at that moment. The trouble is that regular landscape seem a little too easy after a good session with ice.

    Blue Anchor

This colourful scene on the beach at Jökulsarlon is the result of careful observation. The waves moving around these big chunks were causing grooves in the black sand. With the right angle, the reflected sky colours enhanced the groove textures. This was reciprocal because the grooves enhanced the reflected colours. Magic Cloth Technique Canon 5D3 […]

    Zig-Zag Wander

This was a photographer-crowded beach with few pieces of ice in January. Imagine my luck to spot the zig-zag in these chunks just as the clouds were completing the zig-zag. The moral of the story here is that sometimes, even when things seem hopeless there are treasures to be found. Settings f/8 5 sec iso800 […]

    Mono Ice

The lagoon at Jökulsarlon is the deepest lake in Iceland, some parts go as deep as 200m, quite impressive considering the lake was formed in 1923. Jökulsarlon means “the lake of strange mushrooms”. This shot was taken on a very misty Summer night. What I love about fog or mist is that sometimes you see […]

    Blue Floaters

This was one of many overcast days at Jökulsarlon. These are so worth shooting through, because these conditions may seem uninviting to our senses when we are actually there, but create some really surreal scenes with Great colours and atmosphere. These chunks of ice were sitting grounded about 20M from the shore. Shooting with my […]

    Sweet as a nut

This gem of ice on the smooth black sand of Breiðarmerkasandur was beautiful in the morning light. The window in the sky was prefect to be able to balance the composition in a very simple but effective way. Using the Magic Cloth, I was able to balance the exposure and take advantage of the wave […]
