Our 3 day, guided tour of the South coast includes Jökulsárlón and Vestrahorn to offer amazing wilderness opportunities for photographers. You will feel the powerful silence of the Vatnjökull glacier. Öræfajökull and her majestic header of Hvannadalhnúkur towering over the networks of glacial rivers and flood strewn boulders. All reflected in the stillness of Jökulsarlon – the glacial lagoon. One of our most popular multi-day trips.
This popular multi-day tour includes Jökulsarlon, Vestrahorn Mountain and the South coast over 3 days. During these three days, you can explore many of the great features along the south coast such as the big waterfalls and beautiful beaches. We are never far from the glacier lagoon, so we are in a good location if we are lucky enough to see auroras (winter) or to explore the lagoon through the midnight sunlight (Summer). Here we can also catch amazing images on the black sand beach with glacial ice. We may visit Seljalandsfoss, Skogafoss, Reynisdrengur, Fjaðrárgljúfur, Skaftafell, Jökulsarlon & diamond beach, Fjalsarlon, Höfn, Vesturhorn. Glacier activities may include hiking, glacier hiking, snowmobiles and ice-cave exploring (Winter only), At the Glacier Lagoon you can enjoy boat trips, exhibitions and the hotels we use have great restaurants. Our location list is downloadable at the bottom of the page. It is intended as a list of possible location rather than “Guaranteed” locations, we trust your photo guide to judge the best locations for the available time and weather.
Exploring several locations along Iceland’s South Coast on the way out and on the way back. Towering waterfalls, secret gorges, black beaches and amazing sea cliffs are just a few hours into the tour. Experience Viking hospitality in the Coastal town of Vík and see the making of the famous Icelandic wool sweater…
Jökulsarlon & Diamond Beach
This photo tour could include a couple of sunsets at the famous Jökulsarlon glacier lagoon and a couple of Sunrises on the diamond beach. There might also be opportunities to photograph Northern Lights at Jökulsarlon if the conditions are good for night photography.
Vestrahorn photo tour
This is the shortest photo tour that includes Stokksnes and Vestrahorn mountain. The amazing black beaches and sand tussocks provide plenty of foreground for this amazing mountain.
We can always guarantee ice! The glacier lagoon at Jökulsarlon has been retreating for nearly 100 years and delivers regular, fresh ice chunks to the carpark. The glacier lagoon often treats the photographer to an incredible range of textures and perfect reflections.
The diamond beach is often littered with large chunks of glacier ice that have made their way out to the ocean. They are sculpted by the ocean and washed up on the black sand or shingle and look fantastic with a colourful sunset.
The 3 day Photo Adventure is suitable for most travel photographers. It is for people who want to see and photograph some of the best Icelandic locations and maximise photo opportunities.
The tour allows 2 opportunities for Sunrise on the Diamond beach and Northern lights over the Glacier lagoons.
Northern Lights (Winter only Sept-April)
We take advantage of the often clear skies in the Jökulsarlon area and if we are really lucky some still reflection on the lagoon. This is probably the best place in the world for auroras although we can never guarantee them.
Ice caves (Winter only Nov-March)
When the cold temperatures dominate, the glacier rivers recede and allow access to the Ice Caves forged by the rivers. The easy access ice cave can become crowded, so we offer the chance to upgrade to and ice cave adventure for a better photographic experience.

Pick-up from your Reykjavik Hotel and head to the South coast waterfalls. Seljalandsfoss is the waterfall you can walk behind for infinite compositions. This could be the first or the last photo stop on the tour depending on the conditions. Then Skogafoss which works so well in the Winter light. The afternoon could include Dyrholaey with a sunset at Vik (mid Winter) or heading East with short stops to catch a Sunset at Jokulsarlon (longer days). We settle into our hotel near Jökulsárlón and enjoy an Icelandic evening meal with one eye on the Sky hoping for Northern lights (Winter only). If the conditions are right at a reasonable time in the evening, you could go out to photograph them in the local landscapes including Jökulsárlón. If they appear when your guide should be sleeping, it is possible to photograph them from the hotel.
The day could start with a sunset on the diamond beach, glacier lagoon or an Ice cave adventure. The crystal ice beach has incredible photographic opportunities. One full morning there will leave you yearning for another. Splitting the morning between the Lagoon and beach can be very successful After a warming Icelandic lunch, we can explore other glacier lagoons and the incredible glacier landscapes or head off to Vestrahorn mountain for Sunset. A second night at our Jökulsárlón hotel where we can enjoy a tasty fish supper, some local beer and go through some of our pictures. Northern lights photography if conditions are good.
After breakfast we travel with luggage and camera gear to the glacier lagoon or ice beach, we head back along the South Coast with stops at glacier landscapes, traditional architecture, waterfalls and lava landscapes. After lunch we head back towards Vik or Dyrholaey for the afternoon and Sunset. Longer days may catch Seljalandsfoss waterfall at sunset. Extra activity ideas
Consider combining this photo tour with other Nature activities on route.
This photo tour gets close to a few glaciers, so why not consider some nature activities on and under the glaciers? Standard ice cave tours (Crystal cave) can be booked directly with the tour, but you might want to consider upgrading to an ice cave adventure.
The Golden Circle photo tour route may allow time for activities with local tour providers. Some of these are extreme tours, so please check for requirements and restrictions.
There is no smoke on the water but instead a pretty line and some nice reflected colours on the wet sand left by the ocean as she pounds the glacier ice chunks that rest on the black, volcanic sand. This was on a Winter workshop Feb 2016. On Flickr: Canon 5D3 Canon Ef 24mm f/1.4 […]
