I took this from a cold slope between 2 glaciers in South Iceland. The crater was at Fimmvorudhals and was a little volcanic emission not long before the popular 2010 fountain of liquid magma emitted. At full size, you will actually want to see a mass of huge wheeler jeeps and ski-dos which people like myself, had journeyed up onto the glacier to encounter the crater volcano in Iceland.
The Fimmvörðurháls emission made another hill between the 2 icy masses of Mýrdalsjökull and Eyjafjallajokull. The emission happened on a mobile way. The way markers really vanished into the new hill.
I began asking Icelandic photographers if they wanted to drive their superjeep to the new volcano. Before long we had orchestrated three jeeps loaded with the finest photographic artists in Iceland, the line up to the Mýrdalsjökull ice sheet was developing.
This was the view from a hill where we could look down on the ejecting fountain of liquid magma in the Fimmvörðurháls crater.
I was with some admirable people and sufficiently fortunate to be with serious photographers as we, as a group, had similar objectives, we needed to stand by until night to check whether there would be sunset colours and maybe aurora. The gushing lava crater looked incredible against the sunset sky in late March, although we didn’t get any Northern lights.
The groups were gathering on top of the hill sitting above the spring of gushing lava as it got dark. It was hard to place my tripod. The climate was electric like a stage performance and the sound of the crater of gushing lava was shockingly loud! It resembled a mammoth drum being whipped by Darth Vader.
