There are a couple of chances every year to get a sun setting so near the Reynisdrangur sea stacks off the south coast of Iceland. I have been in this very spot when the sun set behind the fingers and it took all the enchantment away. Having the sun set between the stoes and the cliff is more desirable and this occurs in the Winter time.

Vík í Mýrdal is arranged on the South shore of Iceland. Vík was a fishing town many years ago and along the shore line are memorials of some devastating ship wrecks including a dedication to drowned sailors whose boats were likely caught up with the famous sea stacks (Reynisdrangur). Vík is undermined by glacier floods from an eruption of the Katla volcano under Mýrdalsjökull. Such floods are depicted as the greatest floods people have at any point experienced. The Church is built upon a hill and serves as a rescue point shoud any serious eruption occur.

Vík is currently a traveler’s haven as it lies on the ring-road at a sensible distance for a day trip from Reykjavik. Vík additionally fills in as a valuable resting point as it is half of the way from Reykjavik to Jökulsarlon ice lake and ice-beach.
